Maya Chopra successfully advances defence of duress for domestic violence victim
Maya Chopra secured a unanimous acquittal for a Defendant accused of two counts of Perverting The Course of Justice. The jury heard that the Defendant was under duress when she provided false information in order to receive penalty points on her licence, rather than her partner. Maya adduced evidence from the Defendant of the violence she experienced over the course of several months, as well as contested psychiatric evidence.
The jury deliberated for less than an hour and returned unanimous verdicts of not guilty on both counts.
